Law 11 - Offside 9/16/2024

RE: Competitive Under 12

Duke Christoffersen of Overland Park, KS United States asks...

Hello,

Please see scenario and question below.

Scenario:

The central defender, who is the last defender, attempts to clear the ball out of danger. When he does, it deflects off of an attacking player (who is in an onside postion), and goes to another attacking player who is an an offside position.

Should offside be called in this instance?

Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Duke...

RE: Competitive High School

Shawn Gregg of Houston, TX United States asks...

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Kentucky Wildcats (NCAA Div 1): Less than 2 minutes left in game. Georgia is on offense and runs a play around the right end, the runner fumbles the ball. The ball rolls forward past the line to gain and another Georgia player recovers and the play is whistled dead upon recovery on the ground.
The ball is placed where the Georgia player recovered the ball, not back where the running back fumbled.
Georgia is awarded a first down.

Is this correct? I thought that only the player that fumbled the ball could recover for a gain, otherwise the ball goes back to where it was fumbled....

RE: Grassroots Adult

Bob of West Bridgewater , MA Usa asks...

Red player A is in position of the ball and in the attacking half. Red player B is in an offside position when player A kicks the ball forward. Player B is facing away from player A and is struck square in the back by the ball. Player B has made no attempt to play the ball, they were only struck from behind by the ball. Has an offside offense taken place here?...

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/14/2024

Erez of Haifa, Israel asks...

Hell,

I am seeking clarification on two specific scenarios involving handball decisions in football, particularly regarding the position of the player's body and the location of the handball incident. I would greatly appreciate your expertise on these situations:

Scenario 1: A defending player is positioned within their own penalty area. The defender extends their hand out of the penalty area and deliberately touches the ball with their hand, with the contact between the hand and the ball occurring outside the penalty area. The key points are:
The contact between the hand and the ball is outside the penalty area.
The defender’s body remains inside the penalty area.

In this s...

RE: Varsity High School

David E Frankson of Oregon, WI United States asks...

Recent game, varsity H.S. game, well played by two high level opponents. I was AR1. Question relates to GK possession and safety. Scenario: Corner kick by Team A from AR1 corner. Ball lofts high in the air and will land around the 12 in front of the goal. Team B GK jumps straight up, high in the air, head AND arms above the mass of players around him, and catches the ball securely in his outstretched arms, high above the other players' heads, with both hands securely on either side of the ball. There is firm possession of the ball by the GK as he returns to the pitch surface from being in the air. As he returns, while coming straight down and not diagonally over any other players, and while he brings the secured ball down from his outstretc...

'The ball has not been deliberately kicked TO THE GOALKEEPER.

An indirect free kick is not awarded because it was not the intent of a team-mate to pass the ball in the direction of the goalkeeper.

Example:

A player (Team A) passes the ball back to a team-mate who does not touch it. As a result, the ball goes to Team’s A goalkeeper who picks up the ball, being under pressure from an attacker (Team B player).

Correct decision:
The referee allows play to continue. This is NOT a deliberate kick to the goalkeeper within t...

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/13/2024

Petr of Prague, Czech Republic Czech Republic asks...

More on situation 3. I found IFAB advice that this is allowed. They say the referee can't know if it's intentional. I think it's a bit unfortunate. Imagine if the players start abusing that advice. The team will add one defender in the way and the goalkeeper can catch it entirely according to their advice. The back-pass is cancelled. Welcome to 1992 :-)

Seems like a trick to me. Let's imagine that the team starts doing this repeatedly towards the end of the match. It is the same as when a player picks up the ball with his feet and heads it to the goalkeeper. Just a trick. (We also don't know for 100 percent that it was intentional.)

The question is which player will receive the YC and then where is the restart. That's...

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 9/10/2024

Petr of Prague, Czech Republic Czech Republic asks...

I'm sorry, but I still have three situations. No one gives me such helpful advice as you do. :-)

Situation 1:

Player A5 passes to goalkeeper A1. The ball bounces off teammate A20. Goalkeeper A1 touches the ball with his hand. Offense or not?

Situation 2:

Player A5 passes to goalkeeper A1. The ball bounces off opponent B55. Goalkeeper A1 touches the ball with his hand. Offense or not?

Situation 3:

Player A5 passes to goalkeeper A1. Teammate A20 stands in the way of the ball. A20 does not touch the ball. Goalkeeper A1 touches the ball with his hand. Offense or not? (Could this be a trick? If so who will receive YC? A5 or A20? Where is restart?)

Thanks!
