Question Number: 12867Kicks From The Penalty mark 5/21/2006RE: Youth Sports Under 11 John Zaher of Chatan-Cho, Okinawa Japan asks...Our game ended in a tie and we went on to a shoot out. My question, Is a coach allowed to stay on the field during a shoot out or must tactical assistance be given from the side lines?
Thank you Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson In truth once a match ends it is not totally out of character for a coach to wander out and give some advice or organize how his players in the order they will shoot. THe match is technically over what is now happening is a method to determine a result. However ONCE the start of the KFTPM begin then only the players on the field in the centre circle, the shooter at the PK spot and the two keepers , 1 in goal the other over behind the AR on the goalline. Coaches should be back off the field. Cheers

During a shoot out the coach is suppose to stay in the technical area with the rest of the managers and substitututes not participating. I have seen it before in youth matches where the coaches stand in the center circle with the other potential participants of the shoot out. This seems to be tolerated at the youth level or at least in the areas I referee in. By the book, however, you are correct and the coach should NOT be on field. As Always,

"No team officials, coaches, etc., allowed on the field of play"

Spells it out quite clearly, one would think.
