Question Number: 12956

Mechanics 6/5/2006

RE: Recreational Under 12

Chris of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...

This question is a follow up to question 12906

I love your site, and enjoy a pedantic debate on obscure bits of the rules as much as anyone, so I thought I would throw this one into the ring.

In Q 12906 Ref Contarino is keen to point out that a shootout is not "penalty kicks" but "kicks from the penalty mark". While this is quite correct in accordance with Law 10 and "Procedures to Determine a Winner", the FIFA Regulations for the running of the 2006 World Cup (Art 17.3 and others) states "If the score is level after extra time, penalty kicks will be taken to determine the winner, in accordance with the procedure described in the Laws of the Game"

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Cool, thanx and all that.

Having a glance in my copy of the Laws of the Game yields this:

Away goals, extra time and taking kicks from the penalty mark and methods of determining the winning team --- yada yada

I'm sure Ref Contarino can defend himself but I just wanted to throw that little bit on the table. It seems the Laws of the Game and the competition authourity for The World Cup are at odds over this what Kicks From The Penalty Mark are called. What ever they are called it sure beats a coin toss to determine a winner, don'tcha think?

Keep on keeping us honest Chris...

Regards,

HI Chris,
good to recieve your encouargement and input. If you look over almost any literary package we generally find some mistype quotes contradictions and outright errors. Most of the time a referee can sort it out on the field. However, there are a few times though where the wording creates much greater impact than it should! Cheers
