Question Number: 13181Kicks From The Penalty mark 6/26/2006RE: Rec, Comp, Any Under 19 Dan McGill of San Jose, CA USA asks...What was the rationale behind eliminating the Golden Goal? Deciding games with penalties is like deciding a basketball game with free throws.
Why not have a way to decide a game with standard play? Even if there an unlimited series of extra time periods or something.
What's your take on this?
Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer Drawn matches used to be replayed on the next day. Using an extra thirty minutes of play is a true test of stamina and conditioning of the players and much preferred to golden or silver goals, or so those who establish the Laws of the Game tell us.
This is the world's Game and its Laws and the way it is managed and played are different than those we play in America. I prefer it that way, too.
