Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Tsk. Why is it when coaches have their players do something stupid, it is the referee's fault when the player gets caught? Sounds like you had a very good referee, one with courage and conviction. One with less experience and/or courage would have missed the foul or 'judged' it to have occurred outside of the penalty area, which is exactly what the coach and his player were hoping would happen. Like Referee Voshol, I hope the referee's report is read by the right people and the coach's irresponsible behavior is dealt with so he can no longer ruin the beautiful game.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The coach was wrong twice. First, it was a foul and it was in the penalty area, so the restart would be another penalty kick. Then he decided to act in an irresponsible manner by yelling at the referee, so he should have been dismissed from the field. Hopefully the referee wrote up a good report that will get the coach the long suspension that he deserves.
