RE: Rec Under 15

Stephanie of Santa Rosa, CA Sonoma asks...

I have 11 girls rostered, 4 of whom are technically U12 players (10 yrs old 5th graders, playing against 13 yr old 8th graders) who were moved up because there weren't enough players in our club in either age group.

I'm also a somewhat inexperienced coach/parent doing my best so that they can play.

This evening we were playing 1 short in 95 degree weather. Toward the end of the 1st half a few of the girls came to the edge of the field for water, which I provided from the side line. They never stepped off the field, I never stepped on the field.

During 1/2 time, the ref, a young man of probably 15 or 16 stormed over and in a very rude manner, told me that I was not allowed to "assist my players in any way while they are on the field" from the sideline and that if they need water I have to sub them out and then sub them back in at the allowed times.

I've checked the rules and it says "A coach or player shall not enter the field of play..."

My question is: "Is it acceptable for a player to grab a quick drink of water from the side if they don't leave the field and no one steps on to give it to them?"

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

You were correct. Players may take water or other refreshment during the game, provided they do not leave the field. You cannot throw waterbottles onto or off of the field.

We won't be holding up play while they are getting the water.

And if you choose to call a player over to the sideline for some instruction while play is going on, that's perfectly all right as well. You just have to return to your technical area ("the bench") when you are done with your tactical instructions.

Hopefully your league has some feedback mechanism in place so you can report this referee. He needs further instruction.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Yes, it is acceptable for players to take water from the touchline during the game. Being able to take in liquids during a game is a safety issue, and if the referee isn't sufficiently informed, that must be changed. Find out who assigns the referees for the game you are inquiring about and contact that person with your story. With any luck, they will be better informed than the young referee you mention. If not, contact your state youth referee administrator or state referee administrator. Do it today.

I have taken the liberty to send this question along to your district officials. Better training for officials should result.
