Question Number: 16799

Law 5 - The Referee 9/20/2007

RE: High School

G. Levine of McDonald, PA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 16755

Thanks Refs.

One of the best things about football (real football) is that "the rules are the rules" no matter where in the world you are playing. The WPIAL/PIAA has turned this thing on its head.

I know it sounds crazy but that is the way it is. Totally wrong. These guys make $85 a game and they are not doing the job correctly. It mystifies me.

Not to whine, but in Western PA - american football is KING. I wonder what kind of revolt would ensue if the officials in that game were to change the rules to suit their whims. My assertion is the would be ridden out on a rail.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Don't be fooled, American football is KING every where in the USA. That is followed closely by Baseball and Basketball. Hockey is only big as a youth sport in COLD places.

Of course the most played sport amongst kids and adults is football (real football). But apparently, that has yet to translate to attendance and people watching the game on TV.

85 bucks a game and you don't have to know the rules? Where do I sign up... Sure beats having to know the Laws and rules and rules to answer questions for no money.

Regards,
