Question Number: 26143

Law 7 - Match Duration 4/5/2012

RE: competive Under 14

john of sudbury, derbys u.k. asks...

Duration of play.
Duration of play can be reduced if both teams, and the ref mutually agree.Law 7
Question is what exactly does that cover, especially in U13s age groups,is there anything specific?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi John
Competition rules will dictate that a game must be a certain length. So an U 13 game will be typically 35 minutes.
Now in the event that a game might not get finished because of fading light the referee may decide to suggest that the game be 25/30 minutes a half. That needs to be made before kick off and both teams agree to the reduced halves.
In all other situation the game must be played as per the competition rules so it is not possible to play less than the stipulated time.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

If the coaches and the referee decide before the game begins to shorten the halves, and if there is no league or competition rule preventing that very common practice, then it is fine. What a referee cannot do is play one half at 35 min. And the second half at less, say 30 min. That is a misapplication of the Laws and subject to protest.
