Question Number: 28901Law 11 - Offside 10/25/2014RE: Rec Adult Dennis Cary of Boca Raton, FL United States asks...We all know not to consider an offensive players arms & hands when deciding an offside call. But what about a defender's arms? If the defender has his/her arm extended towards his or her own goal and the offensive player (when the ball is passed to him/her and is ahead of the ball) is beyond the rest of the next to last defender's body, except for the defender's arm(s), is the offensive player onside? I'm thinking yes because 'The arms are not included in this definition,' language seems to only reference the offensive player. Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright Hi Dennis,
For consistency, we apply the same definition to both teams. It wouldn't make sense to be looking at different body parts for different teams.

Only the parts of the players body that can legally play the ball are considered for offside. The same applies equally to defenders.
