Question Number: 28914

Law 11 - Offside 10/27/2014

RE: rec

Ramon Janeiro of wilmington, delaware usa asks...

On a throw in or goal kick, an attacking player that is behind the defense, receives the ball that has been touched by a defensive player, is he off sides? On a throw in or goal kick, an attacking player receives the ball that was touched by a team mate, is he off sides?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Ramon
A player cannot be offside from a goal kick or a throw in. An intervening touch by an opponent makes no difference as it does not negate the directly part. It is still not offside.
Now on the 2nd part the offside will be called when the touch is by a team mate. That negates the directly part of the restart so offside must be considered at the touch / play by the team mate.

Answer provided by Referee James Sowa

There is no offside if the ball is received directly from a goal kick or a throw-in. If there is an intervening touch, then the normal offside rules apply and the player would be guilty of an offside infraction if the ball was last played by a teammate.
