Question Number: 29795

Law 11 - Offside 10/8/2015

RE: Professional

Brian of Brooklyn, New York USA asks...

Team A goalie kicks ball to team A attacker who is closer to his opponents' goal than all defenders except opposing goalie. Is he off-side while receiving the ball directly from the goal kick whether in his own half or not?

Thank you.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Brian,
NO offside is possible when receiving a ball DIRECTLY from a GOAL kick, a CORNER kick, or a THROW-in no matter which side or player you are or where you are on the field of play. All three are EXEMPT from offside! A goal kick is the restart after the opposition kick the ball out over the goal line, it is not a punt or kick by the keeper during ongoing play. Offside would apply to those type of kicks.
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Brian
A player cannot be offside from a goal kick, corner kick or throw in. So if the ball is kicked directly to the player in an offside position from a goal kick there is no possible offside and play continues.
Now sometimes there is confusion on a punt from the goalkeeper. As the ball is in play and not a goal kick offside will be called once the PIOP meet all the offside conditions.
Also a player is not in an offside position in his own half.
