Question Number: 19017Law 3 - Number of Players 5/7/2008RE: Under 17 Steven of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...Can and opponent go off the field of play so he is not offside
And can and opponent go off the field of play to get a opponent offside Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Yes, a player can step off the field momentarily to indicate to the referee he is not involved in the play and be saved from an offside call. However, he best not return until he is sure he will not interfere with the play - in other words, no tricks allowed. As for a defender who steps off the field in a futile effort to put an attacker into an offside position, woe is he. Not only will it fail, because the offside line is considered to be where he was when he was on the field, but he will get a caution for leaving the field without permission at the next stoppage for his trouble. Tsk!
