Law 17 - Corner Kick 5/14/2008

RE: Various Other

John Richer of San Jose, CA USA asks...

It is my understanding that when the ball goes out for a corner, then the corner kick must be taken from the 'side' of the field that the ball went out. A coach told me that changed and corner kicks can be taken from either side - similar to goal kicks can be taken from anywhere on the 6-yard line.

Is that true - and, if so, when did this rule change?

Regards,

John Richer

Golly, a coach made something up and is wrong! I'm shocked! This is what the LOTG still says " the ball is placed inside the corner arc at the nearest corner flag post" which means no you cannot take the corner kick from the corner of your choice.

This is the problem with believing what coaches tell you! However, a simple reading of Law 17 would have answered your question handily enough. It says: "The ball is placed inside the corner arc at the nearest corner flagpost." This means the ball will be placed at the corner nearest to where it left the field, unless it left exactly in the middle, in which case the referee will choose a corner (or allow the team to pick one by not interfering with their corner placement).

Nearest corner, if close to middle of the goal then where ever the referee says or allows.

John, this coach is really mixed up. On corners, the ball is placed on the nearest corner. The referee decides which one and signals which corner. Interestingly there was a time going back perhaps 20 years when the referees had to decide, which HALF of the goal area the goal kick must be taken from. That was scrapped, thank God for anywhere in the goal area. I wonder if this coach is somehow mixing this up and doing it perhaps with the help of magic mushrooms...
