Question Number: 19587Law 5 - The Referee 7/8/2008RE: REC. Compettives Adult Stefan Eriksson of Vancouver, BC Canada asks...We have an issue. we are in playoffs semi finals. the lights went out on the penalty shots in ot. now does the penaltys restart at 0-0 or continue at 1-0??? please let me know asap Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Are you still waiting for the lights to come back on? When a game is temporarily suspended for something that it looks like will pass - the lights can be corrected, the thunderstorm continues off to the east, etc - then things are resumed as they were when they left off. During the game that often means a dropped ball for a sudden stoppage (lights). But it could be the situation develops when the ball is out of play - for example, you hear thunder when the ball has gone out for a goal kick. In that case, you resume with the goal kick. So when the lights come back on, you would resume with the Kicks From The Penalty Mark as they were when the lights went off. If you're going to go back in time, why not replay the overtimes? Or why not replay the entire game? See how it gets ridiculous if you vary from a simple principle? If there is some league or tournament rule covering the issue, that rule would apply.
