Question Number: 19595

Law 5 - The Referee 7/9/2008

RE: Adult

Meg of Liverpool , England asks...

Hello... I just had my semifinal game and we ended up going to shootouts. After each team took one shot (the opposing team scoring and ours not) the lights went off. We are finishing the shootout at a later date to determine the winner but i was just wondering what the official fifa procedure would be in this situation.. Would the shootout be restarted at 0-0 or resume where it left off? Also if you know where i can see it in official writing (for evidence purposes) that would be greatly appreciated... Thanks so much for your time and hopefully i can here back before friday (game day)!

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Ah the third request but wait from another country???, my answer no different than the first two!
Per FIFA
Abandoned Match
An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules provide otherwise.

Often stadiums with night lights have set policy. Either they forsaw this as a possibility and know what action they will take as it is in the bylaws or they will make up something to achieve a result as needed!
Cheers PS if I was on the board and voted I would vote for a match replay as the playing conditions cannot be duplicated although I understand the need to get a result and time constraints they may well decide to something different
I am equally curious let us know!
