Question Number: 20944

Law 11 - Offside 3/8/2009

RE: Rec Under 13

Carl Cutrell of Hendersonville, TN USA asks...

We had a girl that was offsides to the far right of the goal. She was nowhere near the play.

Another girl who was onsides, recieved the ball almost in the center of the field (if not a little to the left center) and scored the goal.

From my understanding of the pictures in the rule book, this goal should have counted. But, the ref would not let it stand and gave them a goal kick.

What should have been the correct call?

Carl Cutrell

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

It is not an offense to be in offside position. But did the referee disallow the goal because of the player in offside position? If he did, the restart would NOT be a goal kick. It would be an indirect free kick at wherever the referee felt the offside offense occurred. It sounds as if this referee really made a mess of things if things went as you say. If the player in offside position was not actively involved in play, there can be no offside offense. Even if there had been an offside offense, the restart is an IDFK, not a goal kick.

Oopsie daisy. This one sounds like a referee gotcha.
