Question Number: 21325

Law 3 - Number of Players 5/12/2009

RE: kids Under 9

Brittany Arnold of Lebanon, Pennsylvania United States asks...

Is a game allowed to be played or started if there isn't any goaly during the game???

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Well in U littles I hold the opinion there should be no keepers but that is a league development issue. Perhaps this league follows that policy? ;o) IF a competative 11 aside it states under FIFA law that while we can alter certain laws as to the number of players, field size etc.. the number of players are such and such one of WHOM MUST be designated as the keeper! No keeper, no start the match. No keeper, the match is eventually abandond if the team remains noncommitted to providing one and referee records the reason in the match report. Shame if this actually occurred! Remember a keeper is but a player that as a special condition can use their hands inside their own penalty area. A keeper is not confined to the area and can play outside the area same as any team mate .
Cheers

There must be a goalkeeper, dressed as a keeper (different colors from the teams). The goalkeeper doesn't have to *act* like a keeper though.

Law 3 clearly states:

Players
A match is played by two teams, each consisting of not more than
eleven players, one of whom is the goalkeeper. A match may not start
if either team consists of fewer than seven players.

I have never heard of U9 NOT using a goalkeeper. Here, there is no goalkeeper at U6 but is at U8 and higher. Check with your League.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

If the league uses small-sided teams, there may be a no goalkeeper rule, which you should check before accepting games for the league.

Barring that adjustment, the Laws of the Game require a properly attired goalkeeper to be one of the players in the game. If there are 7 a side, one must be the keeper.
