Question Number: 21603

Law 4 - Players Equipment 6/30/2009

RE: competitive Adult

t. lawrie of bathurst, n.s.w. australia asks...

Given that a player may not wear jewellery i have noticed that an increasing number of girls are wearing headbands about 2' wide made of cloth that cover their ears as well as holding their hair in place. Is it acceptable for the referee to ask them to take them off to check if earings and studs have been removed?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Yes. It's easy to remove and not a privacy issue. It's not like checking for body piercings under the uniform.

Here's the link to the Football NSW circular regading jewellery, dated 22 April 2008 (I believe it's the most current circular):

While it states that jewellery you can't see is not of your concern, that's only referring to body piercings. I'd say they didn't think about headbands covering the ears.

Still, you're not going to and ask all players to stick out their tongue to make sure they don't have a tongue piercing - following from that I don't see why a referee would need to get headbands removed to check for jewellery. If it becomes visible, deal with it then.

Having said that, I don't see why it wouldn't be acceptable if you do want to go the extra mile - it's only a headband, after all.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I have to disagree. WHile the headbands are legal, absolutely make them show you their ears. We;re not supposed to check tongues as that is somehow intrusive but headbands are no different than making sure tape on ears isn't covering earrings.
