Question Number: 22775Law 3 - Number of Players 1/30/2010RE: Adult alex of africa, kenya asks...This question is a follow up to question 22631 what happens if all substitutes are done and a critical injury is experienced so a player has to be off the pitch. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Alex The simple answer is that the team must play short. That might seem unfair but there is no other choice, not even by the agreement of both teams. Indeed before 1958 substitutes were not allowed at all in a game and if a player got injured the team played short.
