Question Number: 2840

Appearance 12/21/2001

chester miller of farmington, nm asks...

re 2261, concerning sleeve length and color of referee's jersey's. While I do not see how it makes a great deal of difference, the ussf is very concerned that each official have the same length of sleeve exposed, as stated in the ATR's. I suppose there might be confusion if one asistant ref had on long sleeves while the other side did not, or perhaps it is a question of symmetry. This concern fits right in with the rule that no hats should be worn by officials. When skin cancer begins to effect more older refs, I think long sleeves and brimmed hats will become more popular. Style versus health- style loses over time.

Answer provided by Referee Dawson

Good point Chester,.What the USSF consider as professional or appropriate dress not always in league with common sense. Conformity as a power to control and dictate policy maybe well intended reguarding attitude and appearence. It is not really an issue at the recreational level. Cheers
