Question Number: 30180

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 3/7/2016

RE: Intermediate Under 13

Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 30168

I realize now that I had read the OP completely different than everyone else did. I thought the players were running 5-8 (or 10) yards wide of the FOP & everyone else read it as maybe a yard off & 5-8 yards parallel to the FOP. Come to think of it, if you're going to run 5 yards wide of the field, you might as well sit down & have lunch. lol

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Phil
That was my read on it. Players generally do the least amount necessary in terms of running and width. It is also a pretty rare occurrence and one that rarely challenges referees.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Phil,
as we stated over and over, a wee bit is nothing unusual, if you are dodging fans and running amok beyond the sight of official to gain a tactical advantage it will not be permitted. In over 40 years of officiating I have thrice pulled up players for exiting the FOP one for literally running-in behind the technical area to burst into view downfield and a second for going around the goal to get clear for a corner and one for trying to hide he was holding players onside by exiting off the touchline. Other than that, a word or two to those that leave to get treated, fix equipment, get water or show non involvement in offside settles most disputes.
