Question Number: 31753

Law 5 - The Referee 9/2/2017

RE: Rec Adult

Russell of Sydney, Australia asks...

This question is a follow up to question 31746

Definitely not VC, as there was no malice or aggression, hence why I did opted to do nothing.

As this was a first time experience of an incident like this specific nature, it did have me thinking about the 'use' of the push and so subsequently I asked the question if 'unsporting behaviour' was a possibility.
Best to establish if yes or no.

Ref McHugh has confirmed there is no middle ground - so there is the answer. Cheers.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Russell
For me it is either nothing due to its accidental nature or a red card for deliberately pushing a match official which would have a direct free kick restart. Once the referee or assistant is of the opinion that the action is intentional and deliberate a caution is not possible under the Laws. Lifting a hand to a match official is assault and a very serious offence.
In your situation it reads as accidental so we ignore it.
