Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 11/26/2017

RE: Amateur Adult

George of Parangarecutirimicuaro, CA Sacratomato asks...

An attacker is engaged by a defender as the attacker is dribbling towards the opponent's goal. As both plays battle for position and for the ball, goalie dives for the ball when it gets away from both players. As the goalie places a hand on the ball and pins it to the ground gaining control, the defender is engaged with the attacker and does not notice the goalie has control of the ball and kicks the ball out of bounds for a corner kick. What is the call? All the happened within a second. Goalie control plus players battling for position and kicking ball away from goalie all happened in a span of about a second.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi George
A player cannot commit a foul on a team mate including playing in a dangerous manner. He can commit misconduct such as violent conduct yet he cannot foul a team mate. So what you describe is not a foul. The restart is a corner kick.
Had the attacker kicked the ball from the goalkeepers possession it would be a foul.

Answer provided by Referee Peter Grove

Hi George,
If a defender kicks the ball out of play over the end line in the situation you describe, it is a corner kick. The restriction on challenging for the ball when the goalkeeper has it under control by using the hands only applies to opponents, not to team mates.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

HI George, the only play here is a corner kick unless you believed there was a foul involved pushing etc.. It was a mistake by the defender to kick the ball away from his keeper!
