russell of Sydney, Australia asks...

Excellent call by the near side AR late in the PSG v Red Star UCL match today.

Fast forward to the 12.47 point in the following link.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Russell
Yes good call by the AR. It is interfering with an opponent although it more likely should be called as a holding foul. In some ways the play by the onside play sorts of negates offside.
It is a screening type action where the attacker has blocked the movement of the defender towards the ball. That is holding by using the body. It can be a difficult call to detect and in this case the offside position helped the AR to focus on the PIOPs illegal actions.
Either way it was offside or a holding foul

HI Russell,
absolutely stone cold interference of an opponent! The contact makes the infraction a DFK for holding instead of INDFK offside in my opinion.
Cheers
