Question Number: 3415

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play

Dan Brown of Tottenham, England asks...

If the ball is about to cross the line for a goal and a fan runs onto the pitch and clears the ball then how does play continue?

Answer provided by Referee Dawson

Hi Dan,.quick answer DROP BALL for outside interference at point where the ball was, subject to the special circumstances of law 8 in the goal area. .In reality try and restrain the player who would have scored from killing the miscreant. .It might be interesting on a sporting note whether the reprieved team would stand back and allow the agrieved team to just pot it in off the drop? Would you? Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Stacy Kalstrom

Drop Ball is the answer. This information is found under Law 8, The Start and Restart of Play. "A dropped ball is a way of restarting the match after a temporary stoppage which becomes necessary, while the ball is in play, for any reason not mentioned elsewhere in the Laws of the Game."..Your example is just that. Another example might be a dog running onto the field and getting the ball, or a small child, etc...Thanks for visiting our site.
