RE: U8 Under 14

Etienne Boucher of Edmonton, Canada asks...

Hello there,.this time my question is can you or should you give a yellow card for U8. What happened is a player slide tackled another player from behind.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

First, allowing slide tackling at U-8 is insane as well as dangerous. We simply don't allow it. I suppose there's nothing preventing a referee from issuing a yellow card to a U-8 player, but why would you want to? U-8 is instructional and that goes for the referee too. We should be talking to these kids and showing them why things are and aren't done instead of doling out punishment. I don't do U-8 games but couldn't imagine issuing a card.

Answer provided by Referee Stacy Kalstrom

Instructional or not even in the U8 program you have over zealous coaches who encourage over zealous players. If there is a player who is behaving in a dangerous manner and putting other players in jeopardy, it is our duty for the SAFETY of the players to sanction misconduct. I would hope that the player could be handled by simply speaking to him/her, but if this isn't effective you can and should use a card.
