RE: Girls High School

Woody of Baltimore, Md USA asks...

What is the rule on referees wearing hats? Is it legal, but not ethical? Illegal? Or legal and ethical?

Answer provided by Referee Dawson

Hi Woody,.It is not part of our sanctioned equipment, at the elite level for a single match, lose the hat! At the grassroots in multi tournament grinds amid the burning sun and game after game, slap on the sunscreen and wear the darn thing if you need to. Bareheaded for the assessor to advance the ladder but as for the concerns of ethical or legal? ...pishposh... practical is the key it ain't worth getting sunstroke for no one, no way, no how..Cheers

Woody, read the NFHS soccer rules book. You'll find the referee is permitted a black cap. ..If your referee association has taken this from you, don't wear it. The rest of us forgo the cap because it just ain't done. Unless of course you shy away from the various forms of skin cancer, that alone is reason enough to wear a cap any time you can...Regards,

The hat issue is a silly one to me. Why is soccer the only outdoor sport I can think of where hats are not allowed? I wear a hat for a number of reasons but mainly that it enables me to do a better job. If it's sunny,or hot,or raining, I simply can see better with a hat. IFAB's ban on hats seems ridiculous but as Ref Fleischer says, you want to move up, drop the cap

I can name a few grounds where because of the direction of the feild you are looking directly into the sun. If there isn't a hat on your head you have your hand on your brow and guessing which shadow is which player. So you look silly.
