Question Number: 6667

League Specific 10/21/2003

RE: Pro Adult

Matthew Allen of Manchester, England asks...

In the english game if you get 5 yellow cards in the league then you get a suspension. Does this rule applie to LDV cup matches. For example if say David Eyres was on 4 bookings and got booked in a league game on a saturday and the cup match was on Tuesday would he be suspended from the cup match or the next league match?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer 10/21/2003

Check with the administrators of the LDV Cup. The answer you seek will be there!..Regards,

It tends to the common ruling though some leagues are different. It can work in a good way or a bad. The good is to prevent players from getting a YC. However they may go looking for a YC if they are on 4 before a big match so they know they will be available for the big game.

REf Sebalja raises an interesting point that a deliberate caution is sought to revert to zero. I believe in the MLS there are incentives that can reduce the effect of cummulative cards relating to fairplay conduct...I wonder if in the EPL a similar project is implemented?..YELLOW CARDS.A penalty point system will be used to weigh the tactical significance of various yellow cards. Players accumulating 21 penalty points shall be suspended one game and fined. Players are suspended an additional game and fined $1,000 after the accumulation of an additional 11 points and each 11 points thereafter. Should a player accumulate 11 points in three consecutive games in which he appears, the MLS Disciplinary Committee will assess the appropriate disciplinary action...In 2003, a Good Behavior Incentive will allow players to reduce their caution point total in situations whereby they are between ONE (1) and FOUR (4) caution points away from being issued a suspension. Playing three consecutive games without earning a caution, red card or sanctioning by the MLS Disciplinary Committee while in this state of ?warning? shall reduce that player?s caution point total by FOUR (4) points. Each Player will be afforded one opportunity per season to have FOUR (4) caution points removed from his personal record. ..Cheers
