CARISSA JACKSON of EUREKA, MO STATES asks...

DURING A GAME ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2, 2003, ME AND MY FIANCE' WHERE WATCHING OUR 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER PLAY SOCCER. SHE IS THE GOALEY ON HER TEAM. THE COACH ASKED MY FIANCE' TO HELP OUT FROM THE SIDE LINE WITH DEFENCE. HE BEGAN TO TELL THE DEFENCE GIRLS ONE BEING HIS DAUGHTER TO STAY FOCUSED AND PAY ATTENTION. THERE WAS A MAN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD DRESSED AS CASUAL AS WE WHERE. THIS MAN BEGAN TO TELL MY FIANCE' TO STOP TELLING THE GIRLS AND HIS DAUGHTER WHAT TO DO. A FRIEND TOLD MY FIANCE' TO STEP BACK, HE DID SO, ABOUT 20 FEET. THEN HE BEGAN TO CHEER. THE MAN STOPPED THE GAME AND SIGNALED THE COACH ONTO THE FIELD. MY FIANCE' CONFRONTED HIM AND IT WAS ONLY THEN DID THE MAN ADDRESS HIMSELF AS A REFEREE. MY QUESTION BEING, HOW FAR BACK DOES A PARENT HAVE TO STAND FROM THE FIELD LINE AND WHAT DOES THE STATUE SAY ABOUT A PARENT TELLING THIER CHILD WHAT TO DO?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Spectators watch from a safe distance. The game is for the 8 year olds, cheer when they get close to the ball and bathe them after they get home. Enjoy their play...Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Victor Matheson

While anyone can yell support, only the coach is allowed to provide tactical assistance to the players. At the U-8 level, it's sometimes hard to distinguish cheering and tactical guidance. I find that the players generally enjoy the game more when their parents limit the amount of screaming they do and when their parents aren't always telling them what to do.
