Question Number: 6772

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct

RE: New ref Under 8

Sandy Clarkson of Cleethorpes, NELC UK asks...

An attacking player breaks free , with just the goalkeeper to beat, but running full speed knocks the ball too far ahead, and the goalkeeper gathers it up. As the goalie collects the ball a defender catches up with the attacker, and trips him from behind. What is the correct decision? ( The attacker hasd lost the ball by the time he was tripped, but was tripped inside the box).

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

If the trip is considered careless, reckless or excessively forceful there has been foul play and the restart is a direct free kick or penalty kick, as appropriate. ..Regards,

Keep in mind the age group you're talking about. 7 and 8 year olds are almost always being careless. It's your job to ensure their safety.

Answer provided by Referee Victor Matheson

By the letter of the law, this is tripping and should be punished by a penalty kick. In the spirit of the game, if you think this is just a couple of players getting tangled up because, well, they are U-8, then you can decide not to call anything and tell the players to be more careful.
