RE: Youth Under 15

Stephen Mullane of stirling, Scotland Scotland asks...

With one minute to go in a cuptie(2-1 down) a free kick is awarded to an attacking team in their opponents half .The referee allows a player to play the ball forward from a stationary position ,A team member starts his run after the ball has been kicked from behind where the kick has been taken, he then runs onto the passed ball and scores. The Referee claims he is offside. How can this be ?The Laws Of the game state you cannot be offside in this situation and as a qualified referee of 12 years i am also baffled. Can you help explain this decision?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Other than the referee is wrong and doesn't understand offside, I have no explanation. Sometimes we do things for which there are no explanations other than going brain dead.
