The Technical Area

RE: Gold Under 15

Phil of Vancouver, Canada asks...

RE: 2439 Technical Area..Where in the LOTG does it cover/mention the "Technical Area" and what are the dimensions? ..Can the referee designate a Technical area at the start of the game, for example, the team bench plus, for example, 1 to 5 meters either side as a reasonable area to coach from i.e. the coach(s)/ substitute players must stay within this area during the game? ..If there is a Technical area designated by the referee, can a coach temporarily leave the confines of the tecnical area to relay coaching information to his players and then return to the Technical area? If so, I am assuming this would mean a reasonable distance from the technical area and not mean he can jog down to the other end of the field to have a chat with one of his players (e.g. at a corner kick) and then return. ..If the coach has left the Technical area and has not returned to it, and the referee tells him to return but he refuses, should the referee eject the coach from the game for dissent?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

That information may be found on page 38 of the Laws of the Game. All of your questions are answered there. It is recommended that markings are used to define this area; if they see you mark the area you are asking for trouble from the people you demand to remain there. If they are marked beforehand, now that is another story. The technical staff WILL remain within that area; they will be identified before the beginning of the match. They WILL behave in a responsible manner. One person at a time may convey tactical instructions to his team and he must return to his position after doing so. Think seating area here... But, in junior football this is all a dream. If it happens to you give thanks! ..Regards,
