Jason Duong of Sydney, Australia asks...

Dear Ref,..My son asked me this question I could not answered. Could you help please. He asked, how many players (including reserves) and referees (I think including linesman???) are there in a soccer match?..Looking forward to your reply. Thank you!..Regards.Jason Duong

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Answer provided by Referee Morley

As ref Fleischer has explained it is impossible to say without knowing the league or competition rules. Looking at competitive international matches you have 22 players on the field, 5 named substitutes on each side of which 3 can take part, one referee, two assistant referees and one fourth official, so if my maths is correct that makes 36 people in total!

Answer provided by Referee Nagy

Jason, Since it was your son who asked the question, I will assume that he is refrring to youth soccer play. Often there 18 players who are allowed to be on a team and just three officials. That makes 39. But in international matches my friend Steve Morley is correct: 11+11+5+5+4=36. Gene
