Law 2 - The Ball

RE: High School High School

Larry of Oxford, MS U.S.A. asks...

This isn't really a question but just an observation. The more I referee the more I realize how important the soccer ball is the game (don't laugh)...So many referees I have worked with, will pick up the ball squeeze it a little and then say "Looks good". ..In my pre-game inspection I have made it a point to get a ball gauge and measure the amount of air. Many referees I've worked with look at me as if to say "Why are you bothering?"..Why if the soccer ball is such a major instrument of the game would so many referees determine to inspect it with a little squeeze and a bounce before the game?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Even in American High School the ball is important!!! ..Regards,

Hi larry, .The ball is very important. If you train with a certain style or pressure the skill you develope may well be interdepenant on the ball being a rock or a more mallowable type. I refereed a u-17 mexican team at a soccer camp where the ball they used was inflated to the top of the limit the Canadian kids complained the ball was too hard. To deaden or swerve this ball you had to be on the ball so to speak to effectively control it. .Cheers
