Question Number: 18944Law 5 - The Referee 4/30/2008Steve of Stockton, CA USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 18885 Not a question, just a comment. The most effective way to learn this (note that I intentionally do not call it the 'best' way) is to blow the whistle IMMEDIATELY for a penal foul in the area. A few years ago, I did just that, and had to pull the ball out of the goal (figuratively - the attacking team actually retrieved the ball) to award a PK. I got lucky in that the attacking team converted the penalty, but it also hurt my credibility for the rest of the match. That was a hard way to learn a lesson! Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol I did something similar. Fortunately the PK was scored. As we moved back toward midfield for the kickoff, I quietly thanked the player for saving me by making the shot.
