Question Number: 19030

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/8/2008

RE: Select Under 18

John of San Jose, CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 19010

Hello Referees,

Thank you very much for this valuable information and glad that you were able to share some insight. In example #2 (this actually occurred about 2 years ago), I called the foul on the red player that left her feet, headed the ball out, and landed on the opposing player. My reasoning, at that time, was that the blue player established position (since she was standing still) and it was the red player who came down and flatten the blue player though she clearly was playing the ball. I guess one can call it a charge if one was playing basketball but we are not. Basically, the red player was clearly playing the ball and her momentum carried her into the other player. Hence, I should not have called a foul. I agree with the panel. In example #1 (occurred a couple of weeks ago), I could have used the same logic as the previous example but it didn't make sense, which is why I made a no call. I did get some heat for it because of the collision in the PK area but both myself and another senior referee agreed that I made the right call though I was not completely sure why. This is the reason why I was questioning my call from a game two years ago because of the similarities and I made two different calls. Thanks again
