Question Number: 19043

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 5/9/2008

Dave E of Clarkston, Washington USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 19015

It is my understanding that the correct restart in this situation should be an IFK where the ball was when play was stopped, according to the 2008 Advice to Referees, 12.35 Restarts.

Answer provided by Referee MrRef

If a player leaves the field and engages in violent conduct off the field during play the correct restart of play is Indirect Free Kick where the ball was when play was stopped. The reference for this is the Additional Instructions and Guidance section of the Laws of the Game, page 121. Further Advice to Referees on the Laws of the Game 12.35 addresses this restart in the same manner. By the way, the chart where this restart is written is in the current edition Revised 2007

I allowed this error to go forward. It has been corrected in 19015.

Nice catch Dave and thanks

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Spot on mate
Restart of play:
• If the ball is in play and the offence occurred outside the fi eld of
play
– if the player is already off the field of play and commits the offence
play is restarted with a dropped ball* from the position in which
the ball was located when play was stopped. *
– if the player leaves the field of play to commit the offence, play is
restarted with an indirect free kick from the position in which the
ball was located when play was stopped. *
Cheers

My mistake. I was going by the 2007 Advice not the 2008
