Question Number: 13062Law 7 - Match Duration 6/17/2006RE: Adult Vik of Germantown, MD USA asks...Where did the practice of adding time come from? In other words, why do they not just play 90 minutes, stop the clock when the subs and all that happen, instead of keeping the clock running, then needing to add time at the end? Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer The concept of adding time is allowed, no directed, by Law 7 - The Duration of the Match. It says the referee will allow for time lost due to substitutions(s), assessment of injuries to players, removal of injured players from the field of play for treatment, wasting time or any other cause.
The referee is solely responsible for keeping time he may or may not stop his watch. The clock you see running on the television is the television clock and is not "official". It is just there to give an approximation of the time elapsed.
Lets look at stopping the referee's watch - it's not a wise idea because, in the heat of things on the field, you'll forget to start it sooner or later.
