RE: Rec and Select

Mike Kremer of Fort Thomas, KY USA asks...

USSF soccer matches are in progress.
Lightnig is observed and play is stopped.
Players asked to leave field.

How many minutes after last observed lightning do you wait before allowing players back onto the field to resume play.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

All reasonable and resposible lightning experts recommend 30 minutes. Unfortunately, there is no set policy. Most locales wait 15-20 minutes after seeing lightning or hearing thunder. Remember, most lightning injuries occur when there's no rain and the sun is shining.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

There is a 30 second flash to bang and wait 30 minutes paper someplace. I don't remember if it is US Soccer or another of the USA national associations, either way it's a good gouge. Don't forget lightning can come from a clear, dry blue sky -- China lost a player to this in Singapore during a practice session a few years ago.

Regards,
