Question Number: 13762

Law 7 - Match Duration 9/13/2006

RE: Competive High School

nathan of Denver, Co U.S.A. asks...

The game was about to end and we were down1-0. My team got a free kick. it went wide but the other team touched it when it went out. even though we hade a corner kick, the ref ended the game. whats the call?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I assume even with all the strange rules in American High School soccer that the game is over when the referee says it is or when the clock goes off. If there's a high school rule that the clock stops on a corner kick, than this is referee error. In the rest of the world this wouldn't be a question as the game is over when the referee says it is.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The game is over when time expires. Time stops on an injury, a disciplinary issue, a penalty kick, after a goal and when the referee stops time. I suppose the referee found no reason to stop the clock. Game over.

The referee can end the game here. The only time it is extended is for a PK to be taken.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

A match duration is what it is . The referee decided there was time for your first free kick but not the corner, as a fact concerning play that is all there is to it. A match is over when the referee as the timekeeper has decided it is so. ONLY on a PK is time extended to allow the kick.
In USA highschool I thought there was a clock count down? If the referee allowed the clock to run and there was no bylaw that stated the clock was to be stopped for corner kicks you are out of luck mate!
Cheers
