Question Number: 14836

Law 4 - Players Equipment 2/12/2007

RE: Recreation Adult

John Burns of Ladera Ranch, CA US asks...

We were in a game the other day. The weather was rainy and cold. Several players were waering knitted beanies with no writing or markings on them. The referee asked us to remove them. He said that FIFA prohibits hats. I understand certain hats can be unsafe (basebal caps, etc.), but I thought some hats in some circumstances may be allowed. Feedback is helpful.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi John,
UNSAFE equipment is banned as an opinion by the referee of the match but how dangerous were these wool beanies?? Were they tasselless? Staying warm and enjoying a match is not a bad idea rather then simply enduring a miserable outing! In Canada I have no issue with a touque or mittens provided they are not hard edged, zippered or buttons. You got a referee who felt different, it happens the only compensation is your opponent plays under the same ruling. Cheers

If the referee felt the hats were dangerous, then it was a good decision on his part. FIFA states players may not wear anything dangerous to themselves or opponents.

Just how rainy and cold was it in Orange County? Please forgive the panel members from the Midwest and Canada if we do not comiserate with you.

Having said that, if it is really that cold players in youth and recreational leagues should be allowed to wear warm clothing, including hats. I've reffed games with 4 layers of shirts on, plus windpants. I've got a cap I can use to keep sun out of my eyes or keep rain off. If I'm going to be wearing additional clothing, I can hardly forbid the players from doing so.

You do your best to make things match - for example, you wouldn't want to see a bright pink sweatshirt under a lime short-sleeve jersey.

If the referee said no to the hats simply because they were hats, he's wrong. If he felt they were unsafe, he's correct. Youth and recreational players should be allowed headcoverings that are not dangerous. I have a tournament here in ATlanta this coming weekend and it's supposed to be in the 20's and I expect I along with the kids will be wearing stocking caps
