Question Number: 14927Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 3/2/2007RE: Competitive Adult Simon Watson of London, England asks...When there is a restart by the means of a drop ball within the goal area. Can the gaolkeeper pick the ball up? Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson Yes, ANYWHERE in the penalty area, if the goal area it can only be on the 6 yard goal boundry paralleling the goal line plus he can also expect to get his fingers crushed as the kick for the ball is likely to arrive at the same time! It is not inconcievable that the drop ball is done with only the keeper around in the interest of restarting play quickly as no part of the law requires two or in fact any players to be present. The keeper must wait though until the ball actually touches the ground before he COULD handle or kick it! Cheers
