Dear Ref,
Who was the referee for the West Ham home fixture against Liverpool in the 1988/89 season?

My friend said he was rubbish and should be held accountable for allowing Ray Houghton's blatant offside goal, which was Liverpool's second goal of the day and ultimately got us relegated.

What caused West Ham's relegation that season was their inability to score more goals than their opponent NOT a, supposed, referee's error. 18 years on it seems a very small thing given the state of the wine crop or Fiat's designers...

Well since he was refereeing at the highest level your country allows I suspect he was quite good and while not error free the finger of blame rests more on the efforts of the players for the season than a single decision by a referee who sees what he sees as a neutral official with integrity whether he was correct or not. Fairness is not a designed commodity shaped to fit anyones needs it simply is what it is! Cheers
