Question Number: 14956

Law 4 - Players Equipment 3/7/2007

RE: High School

Valarie Newton of Stockbridge, Georgia USA asks...

Are players allowed to wear bandanas during a game?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

High School Rules allow the wearing of a sweat band on the head. A sweat band is not a bandanna. The uniform worn by a footballer is consists of five required items, shirt, shorts, stockings, shoes and shinguards. Other things worn by a player are allowed if, in the opinion of the referee, they do not constitute a danger to the player or to other players. Most of the time the bandanna is used to cover jewellery. If that's the case both the jewellery and bandanna go before entering the field of play as a player.

Regards,

They are not part of referee uniform. If the referee allows it, then it must not be dangerous to other players.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

I would note that many high schools do not allow wearing a bandana at all, under the impression that they are drug or gang related. The HS game is considered an extension of the classroom, so anything not allowe in school would not be allowed on the field.
