Question Number: 14975Law 4 - Players Equipment 3/12/2007RE: Professional Bekezela Ndlovu of Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa asks...This question is a follow up to question 14949 Follow up to the question on the uniform [14949]. I have always wondered does the law specify that the jerseys must be numbered and that a player may only use one number in a game. Are names at the back of the jerseys a must. Why? One player had his jersey torn in a rough challenge by an opposition. Ref could not allow him to use a jersey with a different number and obviusly different colour. Player ended up being subtituted. Is that the law. This penalty taker couldn't retake the kick with a different jersey number according to the ref. Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller No they do not. Most leagues specify the requierments for team uniforms. If I were a coach and the league did not, I would want my jerseys not to have numbers so that other teams cannot pin point specific players.

If the league has added their 2d to it the referee is required to enforce their extras. By the way a player has only one name, that's all a referee needs when cautioning or sending-off!
