Question Number: 15106

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 4/2/2007

RE: Adult

Ian of Midlothian, VA USA asks...

If a defender passes the ball to the goalie (who is outside the box) on a goal kick, is the goalie then allowed to dribble back into the box handle the ball and punt it away?

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Not if the defender kicked the ball deliberatly to the keeper. It would then be IFK at the spot of where the handling occurred.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Ian,
IF the pass was a deliberate kick with the foot by a teammate to the keeper then yes iNDFK if the ball is eventually handled by the keeper inside the penalty area. If the pass was from the head or chest or even a deflected ball off the foot that went towards the keeper then no infringment keeper can dribble inside his pA and use his hands. Same if the opposition had last touched the ball as well! Cheers
