RE: College

Kristen Braffet of carlock, IL usa asks...

On a corner kick, does the player that kicks the ball into play get credit for an assist. For my question, the player kicks the ball - and the ball is one-timed into the back of the net.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

I would suppose so

Assists are awarded by the coaching staff, not the referees.

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Well... without a well placed corner the goal scorer would not have scored. He needed the assistance of his teammate to score.

So it was an assist.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The Laws of the Fame do not specify what an assist is, they only tell us when a goal is scored.

Statisticians handle the things like assists; the dubious goals committee tell us who gets credit for disputed goals and neither of these should be a referee's decision.

Regards,
