Question Number: 15220

League Specific 4/19/2007

RE: rec Under 7

christine of ridgway, co usa asks...

I was told that very young player's goalies could not use their hands during games. I don't know if this is true and if it is, why???

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Youth leagues make all kinds of modifications but this one makes no sense at all. I suppose the outfield players cannot use their feet? Would make as much sense. Check with your local league or the Colorado state association

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Christine,
in youth leagues at young ages often there is no actual keeper. As a tactical and cognitive approach to learning the game believe it or not I tend to agree. No use of hands for anyone makes better players later. The skill required and the pressure to be the one responsible as keeper weighs heavier than perhaps it should on a 4, 5 or 6 year old We play 3 v3 no hands allowed at that age. Mind you if they have a designated keeper then the KEEPER can use the hands in the penalty area! often a small half circle around the small goals designates such an area
Cheers
