Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Many years ago Law IV contained that information. Now the referee is only concerned about them being dangerous in the form they are before the match. Basically if it looks like a football boot it is a football boot. Companies making boots have serious money in their designs and if players are forbidden to wear a design the company stands to loose because of it. Their designs are safe when they leave the factory.

Many years ago I found boots that became unsafe when a leather rub strip on the toe, held on by five brass rivets, shrank after a few wet-dry cycles. The rivets began to protrude and create a danger. I passed the information to my RA and soon ALL those boots disappeared. Darwin was right, there is a natural selection process out there, even today.

If you see something that looks unsafe to you, it is -- but be reasonable. If fresh from the box it's safe.

Regards,
