The very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise of precisely this skilful technique dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries B.C. in China.

View Referee Chuck Fleischer profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol Probably sometime when Ooog found the first object lighter than a rock, and kicked it at Krog, a game of sorts was started. This was a great improvement on the game Uurk tried starting the year before, involving rocks. Uurk waited until winter when the pond froze and invented curling instead.
We humans have a remarkable capability of finding fun, and then eventually encoding it in rules so everyone can have the same fun we are having. If that fun involves a skill that we have to develop, all the better.
